Group Opportunities

Want to get involved in our work with the people you know?

Several times a year, we organize volunteer days with schools, organizations and more that want to help support people experiencing homelessness. And for a day, we offer a window into our work, and in turn, volunteers give back to the community—and our neighbors who need it most.

We call this: a day service.

If you're interested in bringing a group to spend a day of service with us, please email volunteer@hchmd.org

What a day of service looks like...

Gardening day of service - June 1, 2018 The L. Warner Companies paid a special visit to Health Care for the Homeless for a day of service on Friday, June 1. The day started with the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau “Injustice Walk,” led by members James, George and Tony, around our  421 Fallsway clinic. Then—gardening!

Free Market day of service with Constellation – April 5, 2018  Volunteers from Constellation Energy teamed up with Health Care for the Homeless staff and clients for our fifth annual Free Market. Throughout the morning, Constellation worked with client volunteers to turn our garage into a welcoming market place. During lunch, volunteers watched a featured video, and discussed the importance of support while moving from crisis to stability. Over 300 people experiencing homelessness were able to receive new clothing, hygiene products, snacks and water. At the end of the day, Constellation volunteers shared a few words to describe how they felt after their day or service—thankful, humble and hopeful.

Flu clinic and coat drive with Constellation and Notre Dame University of Maryland - October 17, 2017 Our partners at Constellation teamed up with nursing students from Notre Dame University of Maryland to host a flu clinic and coat drive. To keep our clients warm and healthy, nursing students administered vaccines alongside our nurses while Constellation volunteers distributed coats that they donated to our clients.

Advocacy day of service with EY - October 6, 2017 Volunteers from EY joined clients and staff for an educational day on advocacy. While here, volunteers took a tour of our clinic and joined the Speakers’ Bureau on an "Injustice walk" around Fallsway. Volunteers also engaged in an advocacy workshop to learn the what, why and how of advocacy as well as current policies and how they can get involved.

Recovery day of service with EY - September 30, 2016 Volunteers from Ernst & Young (EY) spent a day of service at our downtown clinic engaging in conversations around recovery. Through a movie screening on the topic and lunchtime storytelling, EY volunteers, clients in our PHASE 2B addiction support group, PHASE graduates and staff all shared insight about addiction and recovery in their own lives. Volunteers also participated in a training on the overdose-reversal medication Naloxone.

"Anybody can face homelessness. It’s not just the people that you think are poor or rich, it’s everybody. Anything can happen to anybody at any time. I think that’s one of the biggest things I’ve realized working here."
