What attracted you to Health Care for the Homeless and our mission?

I've always had a passion for using my knowledge and skills to serve organizations that align with my core values and beliefs. After working for many different types of organizations, I believe that Health Care for the Homeless has a unique perspective and ability to impact the lives of others, and I want to be a part of that work.

In your view, what are the biggest workforce challenges facing health care organizations right now?

The ability to keep up with the demand, as well as the ability to attract and retain top talent. COVID changed a lot about the way we work and the way we approach interactions in the workplace, but there are some roles where human contact and daily interaction are critical. As an organization, we must ensure staff are safe, cared for as a whole person and motivated to come to work every day.

How do you see HR’s role in making Health Care for the Homeless a place staff want to stay and grow?

I strongly believe that HR's core role is to help make your work life a little bit better each day. I want the HR team to be seen as a true resource and guide. Staff are our core customers, and we are here to ensure they have what they need to be their best selves at work.

What role does HR play in building an equitable and inclusive workplace?

HR is the pulse check of the organization’s true culture. HR should be the first believers and ambassadors for not just talking about equity and inclusivity but making sure these values are reflected in our actions and decisions.

What are a few ways HR can support staff well‑being and prevent burnout?

HR can support staff wellbeing and prevent burnout by:

  • Encouraging staff to disconnect and take time off
  • Being a trusted resource and advocate
  • Listening to staff concerns and taking appropriate action
  • Upholding our values and beliefs as an organization
  • Identifying creative opportunities for staff to be their true selves, to feel safe and have fun at work

I want to think outside of the box to ensure staff feel seen, heard and appreciated for all they do.

What’s important for staff to know about you – or a message you want them to hear from you right now?

I am a leader who genuinely cares about the people I serve. It’s important for staff to know that I am working hard to make the work life of others better in a way that is meaningful for them. I try my best to meet people where they are and I'm always willing to lend an ear to help you work through any matters that are important to you. I believe that a happy employee is a THRIVING employee, and I want to do my best to ensure that every staff member can THRIVE at work.

What brings you joy or helps you recharge outside of work?

My kids bring me joy! I am very family oriented. I have two teens and they have my whole heart. I'm also a huge Ravens fan and a crab-loving Baltimorean to my core. While I am involved in serving within the community, I truly am a home body at heart, so I enjoy simply relaxing at home with wine, a bag of Boom Chicka Pop kettle corn, and a good show to binge – that’s my definition of a GOOD time!

Congratulate Nikia when you see her!
