Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service; In Search of Beloved Community

Each year the third Monday in January marks Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day to celebrate the life and legacy of this historic civil rights leader and advocate of nonviolence. Learn more about his impact today here.

This is the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a National Day of Service, a "day on, not a day off." Service to others is a powerful tool that empowers and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community:

Dr. King's Beloved Community is a global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger, and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry, and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. -The Beloved Community: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Prescription for a Healthy Society | HuffPost Latest News

By channeling Dr. King's life and legacy into community action, we can take a step closer to realizing that goal.

Check out events and volunteer opportunities to find ways you can help support the beloved community in your area:

Let your colleagues know how you spend (or plan to spend) the day!
